I’m Yuka Kobayashi and I’m from Ise City Japan. I’ve lived in Ise in my whole life. I’m an English teacher for kids and a volunteer tour guide in Kawasaki Shouninkan, a historical building built about 100 years ago that holds the Kawasaki museum.
Located about 10 minutes north from Ise and Ujiyamada train stations on foot, the Kawasaki district of Ise has many restaurants, cafe’s and shops located in traditional Japanese buildings. I visit Kawasaki once a week and work as a volunteer guide once a week. I do my best to tell tourists about the history and best places in Kawasaki.
A part of Kawasaki’s history has to do with S-Cider, a kind of Japanese soda pop similar to Sprite or 7-Up but sweeter and smoother. S-Cider was originally made by Ogawa Shoten over 100 years ago in part of the building which is now Kawasaki Shouninkan. For a long time, it was loved by many people but it hasn't been produced in a long time. However, all that changed late last year when S-Cider made a comeback!
Most soda pops nowadays are made with gum syrup or corn syrup, but one thing I like about S-Cider is that it is made from using powdered sugar. I feel more care and attention is used when they make S-Cider.
One day when I went to Kawasaki Shouninkan, I was surprised to find S-Cider. I had never seen it before since they stopped making it before I was born! but when I tasted it, it reminded me of my childhood and eating “mizuame” (water candy) at my grandmother’s house. It brought back some great memories for me.
Even though I didn’t know anything about the real S-Cider’s taste I thought my father would have so I bought some for him. When I showed him the bottle, he said he didn’t remember it but after tasting it he said “I don’t remember drinking S-cider when I was a child, but I remember the taste! This is it!”
And like me, he was reminded of many happy memories and he told many happy stories. I was really happy to hear them and see my father so happy.
Nowadays we can buy so many cheap things that are made from large
scale production lines but I feel it is the handmade things that make us happier. Oh, without a doubt, S-Cider is made using modern equipment, but I feel the extra attention given to it when I taste it. We never forget the things made by hand with love.

まずサイダーのような炭酸飲料が日本に伝わってきたのは幕末、ペリー来航までさかのぼります。飲料水の一部としてレモネードを積んでいたのが始まり。なんと、レモネードがなまってラムネになったんだそうです。でもレモネードとラムネ、味がぜんぜん違うのに不思議ですね。
昔、ここ伊勢でサイダーやラムネが作られていた事を知っていますか？
私のボランティアしている伊勢河崎商人館は昔、大きな酒問屋・小川酒店でした。小川酒店では明治24年にはラムネを作っていたそうです。明治30年代に入るとサイダーの製造販売が始まり、ビー玉入りのものはラムネ、王冠栓のものをサイダーと呼ばれるようになったよ
うです。
その当時サイダーは高級飲料だったんです。たとえば、病気のときはサイダーが飲めるけど、普段はラムネという感じです。
その当時エスサイダーはたくさんの人たちに好まれ、飲まれていましたが時が過ぎてエスサイダーは昭和４、５０年代に製造を中止しました。
そしてエスサイダーは時代と共にこの町から消えました。
ある日私がボランティアに行った時の事です。入り口のカウンターのところに見慣れないビンが・・・・・レトロチックな可愛いラベルには、右読みのエスサイダーの文字が！！
四半世紀の時を越え、幻のエスサイダーの復活です！ボトルのラベルも当時のものを再現されているそうです。
飲んでみると、すごく優しい味がしました。今までに飲んだサイダーとは確実に違った味と感覚。昔食べた駄菓子のような懐かしい味がしました。
なぜこんなにやさしい味がするのか？私はとても不思議だったので作り方を聞いてみました。
一般にサイダーと呼ばれている飲み物、最近では液状の砂糖を使うそうですが、このエスサイダーは当時の作り方をそのままにお砂糖を溶いて作られているそうです。砂糖を溶く一手間、人の手が加わるだけでこれだけ味が変わるなら、人がものを作る愛情や熱意は伝わるものだと思いました。
もちろん、私は当時のエスサイダーの味は知りません。これは本当に当時の味なのか？私は、父や昔サイダーを飲んでいた人たちに飲んでもらうためにいくつか買って配ってみました。
そのほとんどの人はビンを見ただけでは、何も思い出せませんでした。一口飲んだ瞬間、『うん。これや！昔の味はこんなんやった！！』と。そして、その当時サイダーを飲んでいた頃の懐かしい話をうれしそうに話してくれました。
昔の優しい味が飲んだ人の心を懐かしくさせたのでしょうね。私もエスサイダーを初めて飲んだ時、この優しい味で昔を思い出しましたから。
